News :: General News : Former Queensland Premier champions R18+ ratings category |
Former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie may have quit his post as Los Angeles-based Trade and Investment Commissioner, but he took advantage of his location a few weeks ago to attend E3.
The politician then used his experience as fodder for a very public championing of the pro-R18+ ratings category for video games, calling on the Australian public to catch up with the rest of the world, protect our kids, and support a growing local industry.

News :: General News : What’s in a Name, Asks Blizzard |
When Blizzard announced their intent to force players into signing up to their services using only their full, real names, the decision was met with such amazing outrage the developer hastily swept its idea under the rug and stood on top of it, whistling nonchalantly. Now StarCraft II players will also be able to change their in-game and forum nicks without a fee, too – but only once, so make it count.

News :: General News : 2 Minute Review - Puzzle Quest 2 (PC) |
Puzzle Quest 2 is accessible, addictive, conservative, and clean. Unlike Galactrix – the lukewarm space-based pseudo-sequel released in February last year – it makes absolutely no attempt to reinvent the formula established by the first Puzzle Quest. This is a good thing. The first Puzzle Quest succeeded because it took a simple and appealing premise and executed it competently. Puzzle Quest 2 surpasses its predecessor because it takes that same simple, appealing premise and executes it elegantly.

PS3 Other OS Case Closes - End Result Predictable |
When Sony axed the ability for Playstation 3 users to utilise the system's Other OS option, gamers were pissed. None more so than Michael Trebilcock however. The Adelaide man, who also used his console as a computer due to the Other OS ability, took his complaints straight to the court, seeking $800 from Sony, an amount reached "calculating how much it would cost to rent a laptop for each day the component has been removed".
Now it seems a verdict has been reached and the result is predictable to say the least.

Is it a crime I've never played the original Shogun?
Looking at this epic 'Battle Report' trailer for Shogun 2: Total War I feel like I've been sorely missing out. From the realistic weather effects to the impressively lifelike AI of each individual soldier, I think it's high time the series and I became aquainted.

Bloodbath at Stardock: Botched Game Launch Forces Staff Purge |
Bad news from Stardock, the developer of Sins of a Solar Empire and Galactic Civilizations. An anonymous source has leaked to the gaming website Shacknews the word that massive staff layoffs have followed the launch of Elemental: War of Magic.
While layoffs are commonplace in the world of games development, it has been asserted that the Stardock firings cut deeper than the typical post-launch purge of QA underlings...

Gearbox to Finish Duke Nukem Forever for a 2011 Release |
The rumours are true: Duke Nukem Forever is still in production.
Development is being handled by Gearbox, the studio that gave the world Borderlands, and George Broussard's long-delayed FPS is now scheduled for a 2011 release. The game will include pig cops, gargantuan bosses, a monster truck, a shrink ray, and a demon with three tits (Duke's assessment: "I'd still hit it")...

News :: General News : PS3 v3.00 update woes continue unaddressed |
I am ashamed of myself for raising such a fuss over Sony's sluggish response to reports of problems with the latest firmware update, v3.00. Only a few days after release, and already whinging! I apologise for my hasty reaction.
Now that that's out of the way, let's get down to complaining that it's now eight days on, and not only has there not been a patch, but Sony are still keeping quiet, except for a small mention shoved in at the bottom of a blog entry.

News :: General News : Serverland update - new KOTH maps added for TF2 players |
If you’re itching for a new hill to lay claim to, perhaps it’s time to drop by server 31, our dedicated Team Fortress 2 King of the Hill server. Our lovely server admin Acaila has given you and your friends five new playgrounds to turn into your own personal slaughterhouse. These maps form The Big King pack, which recently received the big rubber stamp of approval from the official TF2 blog. If Valve digs it, the chances of these maps being less fun than running into a barbed wire fence are minimal.
Not only have we updated the server to include the new maps, we’ve even been kind enough to host the map pack on our file server. Read more to get an overview of these five new geographical uprisings.

News :: General News : F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin - latest DLC is out, new PC patch follows |
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is still alive and kicking, even though most of us have probably un-installed the PC version of the game by now. If you haven't (or own the game on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360) you'll be pleased to know that the latest downloadable content for the game is now available.
To celebrate the occasion, and to entice you to spend your money, a new trailer has been released, featuring semi-corny voice acting that seems to be a thinly veiled post-processing job. In any case, as we've previously reported, if you think that your money is something that you'd rather keep, you can always download the demo before forking out the for the content itself.

News :: General News : EA tries to use Dillinger escape plan to evade law suit |
Those of you who have some grasp of American history will be familiar with the name John Dillinger, who happened to be an (in)famous outlaw who stole a lot of money from some banks, escaped from prison, and who was ultimately shot dead by police.
EA somehow thought that it was a good idea to name some (two, to be precise) virtual guns after Mr. Dillinger, to help give The Godfather II some authenticity. The Dillinger family seem to think otherwise, demanding that EA pay them millions of dollars for the privilege of using their name in the game.

News :: General News : F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin gets another scary trailer |
Those of you who have been following the post-release news for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin will be aware of some of the crazy trailers Monolith have exposed the gaming public to.
Today sees the release of yet another one of these trailers, and it is scary. Not scary due to its content, but scary due it its production values. It is all done in good humour though, so it manages to escape much of the drama that Ubisoft cooked up last week.
